In the landmark case Takhar v Gracefield, heard in Birmingham High Court, Keri Dobson FRICS of Dobson-Grey Chartered Surveyors served as Expert Witness for the Claimant, represented by Wilberforce Chambers. This exceptionally complex case, involving allegations of forgery, undue influence, and resulting trust, hinged significantly on the accurate retrospective valuation of multiple properties. Judge Tindal, who described the case as ‘perhaps the most complex of my career,’ unequivocally affirmed Ms. Dobson’s expertise, stating, ‘there is no doubt about Ms. Dobson’s expertise …and body of knowledge underpinning it; and I would add she was plainly impartial and trying to assist the Court, especially in her oral evidence.’ The Judge’s acceptance of Ms. Dobson’s ‘pre-works’ valuations proved pivotal, forming the bedrock for the court’s determination of damages and financial remedies.

On behalf of the IFE Board and our Head Office team, I’d like to express our sincere thanks for allowing Ian Tonner to take part in the April 2025 Marking Event. His involvement in the marking of the March 2025 exams was incredibly valuable, and we’re grateful for the time and expertise he dedicated to the process.
As a professional membership body and registered charity, we rely on collaboration across the sector to support our mission of improving fire safety and protecting people, property, and the environment, and our qualifications play a key role in this work. The quality and reliability of our exams depend directly on the input of experienced professionals like Ian.
Ian is a long-standing and highly valued contributor to the IFE. In addition to his work as a marker, he’s involved in wider exam development, helping us maintain the rigour and relevance of our qualifications.
We truly appreciate the ongoing support from Dobson-Grey. Your backing not only makes Ian’s contributions possible but also strengthens the overall impact of the IFE’s work. The partnership between our organisations continues to make a real difference to the future of fire engineering.
