School Rebuilding Programme (SRP) Ormiston Sudbury Academy

Ormiston Sudbury Academy was chosen as part of the Government’s 10-year School Rebuilding Programme (SRP), a programme designed to upgrade school buildings across England that were considered to be in the worst condition. Of more than 22,000 schools and sixth form colleges, Ormiston Sudbury Academy was prioritised by the Department for Education as one of 61 schools within Phase 3 of this programme.

Dobson-Grey served as the planning consultant and public consultation coordinator, with additional responsibility for stakeholder engagement. Planning was approved under officers delegated decision with discussions to agree conditions ahead of the decision.

Challenges

  • Neighbour: Through early and proactive engagement Dobson-Grey were able to avoid an objection from any neighbours impacted by the proposals.
  • Site Levels: Dobson Grey took the lead in early and proactive negotiations with the Local Planning Authority and the client’s design team. This collaboration resulted in a sensitive design that effectively addressed the site’s challenging topography and highly visible position.
  • PROW: A Public Right of Way crossed the school site. While the proposals ensured its permanent retention, a temporary diversion was necessary during construction. Dobson-Grey negotiated the removal of a Section 106 requirement and proactively managed the temporary diversion process, working closely with the Highway Authority to meet all regulatory requirements.
  • Achieving High Sustainability Standards: In response to the Planning Authority’s sustainability policies, Dobson Grey prepared an Energy and Sustainability Statement. This statement outlined the project’s commitment to delivering a highly efficient and sustainable development, aligned with local and national legislation.
